Local Support Groups Near Sandpoint, Idaho

Overcoming an addiction is no easy feat. It comes with grueling withdrawals, overpowering cravings, and unexpected triggers. And while willpower is important, most addicts will need an enormous amount of support from others over the course of their recovery.

Local support groups are some of the best sources of this support. They’re often open to anyone who wants to control their substance abuse, are typically free, and are usually taking place in most major cities across the United States.

Below are some of the best local support groups to have a look at.

One of the largest support groups in the world, Alcoholics Anonymous was first founded in 1935. And since then, it’s grown to more than 2.1 million members all over the world.

Part of the group’s success is due to the 12-step model of recovery it developed. And in fact, the National Institute on Drug Abuse actually endorses it as one of just eight evidence-based behavioral therapies.

There are plenty of AA groups happening around Sandpoint to consider too.

Young people can have an especially hard time opening up to vital support. And when it comes to talking about alcoholic family members, many young people may find it difficult to share their experiences with typical Al-Anon groups.

Alateen is an Al-Anon offshoot designed to cater specifically to younger victims of alcoholism like this. Members will often fall into a specific age range (usually around 10 to 20 years old).

While 12-step support groups are usually the most popular option, they aren’t the only place to get help. And SMART Recovery is one of the best alternatives to the 12-step model.

These non-spiritual groups are steeped in the latest addiction research. And groups are often led by certified instructors rather than members themselves.

Professional Treatment for The Best Recovery Outcomes

Support groups can go a long way towards helping recovering addicts stay clean. But they don’t offer the level of care needed to push through the initial stages of recovery, which can often be the most difficult.

A professional addiction treatment program is designed to help patients get through the grueling first few months of getting sober. With evidence-based strategies and treatments, they offer the absolute best chances of getting clean and staying clean.

There are two stages to professional treatment in particular: detoxification and rehabilitation.

Detoxification is the first stage of most successful recovery plans. It deals with the first part of getting clean: withdrawal. This is when the body first gets used to functioning normally without the substance of abuse. And it’s accompanied by uncomfortable symptoms known as withdrawals. Some of the most common include:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Muscle aches
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Paranoia
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

A professional detox program treats these symptoms so as to make the process much more manageable. And that means that relapse is far less likely to occur. Plus, they also protect against the serious and often dangerous complications that may pop up along the way.

Drug and alcohol rehabilitation is the second stage of treatment. And where detox is concerned with the physical side of addiction, rehab focuses on the mental side.

Using one-on-one counseling, group talk sessions, behavioral therapies, and other treatments, rehabilitation programs give patients everything they need to restructure their thoughts and their lives. And as a result, they can learn to overcome the compulsive drug-seeking behaviors and self-destructive tendencies so common with addiction.

There is a range of different rehabilitation programs, but the three most common are inpatient, outpatient, and intensive outpatient programs (IOPs).
